2018 Goals in Reflection: What is happiness?

Another year ended, more goals to reflect on.

  1. Actually read a book a week. Okay, I read 120 books in total but out of the 53 weeks of that 2018 overlaped I managed to do it for 46 weeks, with missing three weeks in October. I don't see this as failure, because life happens and continued to do after failing.
  2. Finish 12 series. Okay, I don't why series goals are so hard, even when I have a list to follow. I finished four and two of those were series started before this year so that's something.
  3. Buy less, read more of my own books. Okay, I definitely failed in the buy less side but I did read 14 books that I brought this year next to the seven last year and I read 34 of my own books next to the 15 of 2017, so it's an improvement but still not great.
  4. Sort of that Netgalley situation. Okay, I still find myself requesting more books than I'm reviewing but we are going to fix this probably this year, especially as I lose access to the good library. What if I move, just so I have access to a decent library. My stat went from 51% to 49% so not great.
  5. Published a Video a Week (actually aiming for two). Okay, this was fail for the most part. I've tried several times to do this but life and energy levels got in the way.
  6. Keep going with the Silent Protagonist and Before & After series. I did this but not to success, I did one Before & After, I filmed more Silent Protagonist than I filmed.
  7. Film seconds of my day. No, this stopped happening after January and I never edited any of the clips together.
  8. Write. God damn it write. Ha. Nope. I've started stuff but all I have are failed attempts at NaNoWriMo.
  9. Write a Review a Week. I had more success than the other writing but not great or consistent.
  10. Start Writing my blog constantly. Ha. Nope. I've started writing a lot of posts, with not enough time for that week and then never go back to finish them even when it was half decent idea. I would like to forced myself to just finish stuff, no matter how bad I think it is.
  11. Bullet Journal. Okay, so this is fail and successish. I did this half way into February, stopped and took it up again in August and I'm still doing it. Bullet Journaling is very try and error, find the right spreads for me. My First attempt was too much effect and didn't work. So I did it for seven months of this year and have continued into this year. I like tracking things.
  12. Pain. Why? Yeah, I tried but I have no answers still. I am on medication for other older medical issues so that something. Also I should take my medicine.
  13. Be happy. Somehow. Can I just say no and move on? No, okay, well I wasn't necessary unhappy but not the best year of my life or anything. The world still sucks and I don't know what the hell I'm doing.

So not a great year of goals, but I never plan to actually finish all my goals. I just try to do better than the year before. I'll be back next week for my goals for this. Taking bets now for what is just a repeat of last year, I do have addiction and things won't be back.

The StrangeAThon (and other stuff)

It's Saturday again somehow. I dis-believe that this day can come so often.

They are strangers in the House, Leia rightfully doesn't like them being here. She also a coward. I'm currently writing this, braiding my hair and editing a video while watching YouTube. Do everything at once.

I did not write anything this week either. The week got away from me. The week often gets away from me. We're already in 10 days into February. OMG, I forgot Valentine's day. No I didn't. It a blar holiday. Lets celebrate All Saint's Day instead.

I made a readathon. The StrangeAThon, feel free to join in. 1st May is when the one with thought happens but you can join me on 26th Feb for a week of possibly dumb challenges.

I like them so I hope others like them and join
in. I'm doing it either way. The F-up challenge is a least something new. It be good if I had a real theme. Other than strange, which could mean anything.

I'm writting this on my old phone which will be forgot soon again as I'm getting my latest one back Monday, now that its no longer has smashed. My old one lags and battery is dying while on charge.

I'm off to read and watch Cake Wars. Its Valentine's special. Halloween Wars is what I'm in the mood for.

Oh, Figment is going Pop now.

Well, I get out doing creative writing by talking about the demise of another creative writing site. Figment. It relinking to site that's does have the actual same function as it, unlike when when it merged InkPop into it.

The only reason I tried Figment was due InkPop's death. It was never as good and can't exactly why. InkPop had the promise of being seen by a professional Editor and the chance to be published but the voting system also meant something. It was something to strive for and you could find the best because everyone was ranked. Feedback was given because we all wanted to be published even if were mostly underage. Also InkPop also had a better colour scheme.

Here is one my favourite reviews:
over 6 years ago K.J. McLelland said:

swap action!

so poetry is my thing, i live it and breath it soooo if i sound harsh i truely dont mean too, *cough* now onward! i like the pitch, imagination and the abilty to dream up the future or alternate ways the past could have played out is a great ability, especially since you dont just write poetry and are branching out in order to write a book in prose form. the concept of the ribbions past life that is mentuioned in the pitch however, seems not to be the true focus of the poem, its like you structeured it loosely round it, i cant find the rhyming scheme and i cant put it to any particular rhythm which is to me one of the key elements to writing good poetry. but i do like your word choice throughout the piece! especially going back to the old english spelling of the word "color" the reption is good driving the poem most of the way

but thats about all i have to say, i enjoyed the poem and the fact that you wrote it on a whim, ut other that keep on doin whatcha do -KJM

I say favourite,  I mean one the most pretentious thing ever said to me on the internet while being igoant as hell. This was written on a poem I wrote without rhyming scheme, it wasn't meant to have one. It was repetition thing I was doing (Waste Material, it's still somewhere on the internet). He probably hadn't got to a poem without a scheme but a lot poetry is without it. Poetry doesn't have rules (well, specific poems do have rules). The reply I wanted to tell him was that "I wasn't branching out, I was whole damn tree". I don't really write poetry but lot of good writing comes from a poetic place (though don't go overboard). I can't see my reply as that died with InkPop but I know I did tell him that I was British, therefore I wrote in Commonwealth English a.k.a. not the weird spelling that the USA alone finds acceptable. I'm dyslexic, but the lack of "u"s is baffling to even me. I guess Accents or something. Waste Material is still something I'm proud I wrote, I know not a lot people can say that about something they wrote when they were 15. Fuck, that was almost ten year ago.

It doesn't help that I've been in writing stump since forever. I love writing and creating stories but I can't put them on paper anymore. Back to InkPop, I mean Figment.

It's death is not the emotional blow that InkPop was, mainly because I'm not all surprised. Figment with all it group features, doesn't seem to have a community attached to it. One of the writers I followed in the day is active, but no one else is. I just didn't understand why kill InkPop completely. But Figment makes sense. I have never heard about Figment from anywhere other than the death of InkPop.

Mibba is still a thing. Movella is thing, with link to a major publisher. Figment.com goes goodbye on the 31st of January, enjoy till then. I'm going to read the threads of InkPoppers bitching before they're gone forever. Just found out that Sweet Evil is a InkPop book, though it was released after InkPop ended.

They were stories I liked but they gone now...probably. I have no way to find them. There was this art one that got to the top five and the main character had magical powers due to art. The ending was depressing.

Now I leave you with this gem of time before.

Profile on it as it ends (which contains some straight up lies. guess.):
Location: CD, Scotland, Great Britain, Europe
About me: I'm Rachel Verna, former Inkpopper. I'm currently in my second year of 6th year (it's complicated) of High School. I'm dyslexic and as much I would love to say it doesn't define me. However, in many ways it does. I'm Scottish and proud. I would love to be added to long lists of great Scots. I do like to experiment in writing in Scots but I ain't no Robert Burns. I also enjoy art and it was the first way I told stories. I've always wanted to be a writer from a young age. I'm currently thinking of pursuing Illustration or English. Either, way I need a B in English. My loves in life are in following orders: 1. Writing/Reading (I adore Books) 2. Art 3. Music (it third because I have no hope of doing as a job) 4.Vampires (young loves last the longest) 5. Batman (Also a young love, I had a Battricycle, okay it had batmirror on it from MacDonalds) 6. Biology(I like science as a whole) 7. My Best Friend Rose (who would be higher if she didn't constantly annoys me about her weird crushes, that and she refuses to use this site;) 8. Shep, my beloved Stalker/Dog 9. Werewolves (I love all supernatural stuff) 10. ART/WRITING/MUSIC!!! A.k.a being creative 11. My Kitten Glasgow Smile (Glasgow for short). Born in October 2011, I kinda named him after the Joker. Ask me how or just look it up. Yeah, I'm weird, but he's just as strangle.

My favorite place to read is: In my bed, at my desk, in buses, on trampolines or the floor. I like to move about while I read.
I can't live without: Paper and Pencils. I need to be able to doodle and randomly write nonsense. I would have said books; However, I lived without reading them for 8 years. It was torture, but I could do again and survive.
If I could be any literary character, I would be: Cleolen Scienten. What? You didn't say they had to be from published works. I really don't know, all my favourite characters ain't that happy. I suppose Hermione Granger, she the only character I can think of that doesn't have any major faults.
Favorite authors: J.K. Rowling, Rachel Vincent, Cat Clarke, Robert Louse Stevenson, Grant Morrison(in my opinion he counts as an author).

2018 Goals: Creating Happy

Happy 2018, I'm back again with goals for the year. Hopefully, I'll have better sticking to them than last year.
  1. Actually read a book a week. So I want to read at least 52 books this year at least. This is is similar to my 52 books a year goal I've done in the past, which was the equtive to a book a week. I think this will make me happy and less stressed.
  2. Finish 12 series. I only finished 2 and I have too many started.
  3. Buy less, read more of my own books. I have unread 674 books documented and I should take more than 15 books a year out of that chunk. Hell, at least 20. I have a TBR of 36 specific books that I own and would like to read this year so hopefully I do that.
  4. Sort of that Netgalley situation. I think I need to limit the number of books I'm requesting.
  5. Published a Video a Week (actually aiming for two). I want to keep my BookTube channel alive and instead of dead months.
  6. Keep going with the Silent Protagonist and Before & After series. I think just generally do more reviews of what ever feel like.
  7. Film seconds of my day. See what happens. Post it month by month I think. I've technically already missed a day but we see how it goods.
  8. Write. God damn it write. Pretty self explanatory. I would like to finish a novel, but I keep putting that it and it's not happening. I just want to stretch that muscle.
  9. Write a Review a Week. I pretty much do this and may as well Stress myself and encourage me not to leave books in Book Limbo for months.
  10. Start Writing my blog constantly. Going back to actual doing Saturday posts every week like I'm meant to on. Short or long on nonsense or proper topics. Fiction or non-fiction. Just writing to a deadline. In this case is more about quantity than quality.
  11. Bullet Journal. This is mainly from wanting to keep tack of some of my week/daily goals. Also track health weirdness and other stuff. Also keep the journaling thing going somehow.
  12. Pain. Why? Actually try to find out why pain. Why are my nerves screaming at me? why numb? Why tired? WHy?
  13. Be happy. Somehow. I don't want to explain this. You explain it.
I have other less practical general goals that most people should do anyway, be more healthy, spread less money on dumb things I don't need. As family we have to lose weight and two of use are having surgery so they have to do it. There's demanding stuff there but I'm not doing anything else with any structure. I just need to find a live the way I want.

Also maybe study dead bodies. Maybe.

Book Review: The Travelling Bag: And Other Ghostly Stories by Susan Hill

Yeah, I don't know why I keep reading Susan Hill either.

From the foggy streets of Victorian London to the eerie perfection of 1950s suburbia, the everyday is invaded by the evil otherworldly in this unforgettable collection of new ghost stories from the author of The Woman in Black.

In the title story, on a murky evening in a warmly lit club off St James, a bishop listens closely as a paranormal detective recounts his most memorable case, one whose horrifying denouement took place in that very building.

In 'The Front Room', a devoutly Christian mother tries to protect her children from the evil influence of their grandmother, both when she is alive and when she is dead.

A lonely boy finds a friend in 'Boy Number 21', but years later he is forced to question the nature of that friendship, and to ask whether ghosts can perish in fires.

So I have a hate-hate relationships with Hill, I find her horror to be boring and pretentious, with a lack of sympathic characters. I have reviewed two of her works (read 4 I think): The Small Hand and The Woman in Black. This book contains four short stories, which feel like Hill's abandoned works. Some of them don't feel like they have proper endings. Unlike my usual way of reviewing short stories, I'm reviewing them indivdiually from memory instead of writing mini-reviews as I read them.

The Travelling Bag: So this is the Victorianish set and we learn the story of someone getting revenge and then random fear of moths for no reason. This has a weird Narrative device as someone telling their fellow club memember the worst, spookest case they ever worked. How he knows the information he does is never explained and doesn't feel like him actually tellling the story. This feels like a series idea and I thought all the stories were going to be told as if they were cases this guy had, had, but no it was just one off. It adds nothing, but set up for disappointment. If we had just been the actual story instead of the weird narrative deice, I would have enjoyed it better. 2/5 stars for sweeping bodies.

Boy Number 21: This is the worst story. So very little happens in it and I was expecting something big with the set up. The big problem is a bigging up to nothing. Not a field trip and a possible psychotic break. 1/5 stars for squished Sandwiches.

Alice Baker:  This is probably the best. It doesn't have a weird narrator and has a concise ending that makes sense. It also from a female character's POV and it wasn't Hill's typical, terrible ghost motivation. This one takes place in an old office building where a new staff member cause a stink. I Not sure why it's was the one left out of the burb. 4/5 stars for Office Politics.

The Front Room: It's Hill's favourite thing. A spiteful person for the sake of being spiteful. Then she a spiteful ghost. A family does a nice thing by taking in an old lady, the father's step-mother. Most of it is set up and then dur-dur-DUR. 1/5 stars for only a shower.

Overall, I give this book 1/5 stars for mediocre nonsense. This book is just bad. There's one story that's worth a read but the others' are Hill's typical mess of work, except some of these feel like Hill just gave up and declare them short stories instead.

Jackson (he's called Kincaid) to swear at each other. Recommend). I liked both these films and made me pumped so I only listen to music the 2 hour ride home. The IT 2017 looks terrible and seems to miss the point. Scary Clown is not why It is scary.

The Reading Quest

Since I've decided to be in a constant readathon mode, I'm singing up for another one. Though this one is pretty cool. It based on video games and role playing.

There will eventually be a champion who will win a book and there also a specific Australian prize if you're located there. I'm not really in for wining (but I also love a free book). Trapped by Books

Life has been calmly ciatic. I have a large list of things I have to do and as the others have a definite deadline. Of course, I often find myself doing nothing and just laying in the briss of stress building. I feel like I don't have a day off any more. I have to read stuff and write things for class while moving.

Put the reviewing stuff on top of that. I have no time to read the stuff I want to read. While I want to read the books I request for review, they feel like a tour and stress me out to get it done. This doesn't need put me in the best mood when reading them and I don't think they get a fair review. Basically, weekly book reviews have to stop for now. I have idea of how to replace them that would take less time while inflecting my opinions on to the world but I don't want to make promises.

Reviews are something I like doing. However, there have been a struggle to write recently. There also not a priority. I want to create my own stuff even if contains some of the issues I would criticise in a review. Though, first drafts are for mistakes and to be criticise by everyone.

To summarise the reviews will come when I have time and when they ready instead of wrote in a rush the night before or lied about when I posted them. There could be big gaps during this month as I am moving and therefore have no weekends.

I spent today moving stuff into the house and will spend tomorrow doing the same thing. I want to make the most of my education and do other career stuff. The weekly random posts still stand and I will continue to work on the novel. I am still working on it but there's not enough to make a chapter and I will at least post complete chapter even not having a full idea how our story will get to its last point.

I will write to next week with something. I might do writing prompts that can be completed in a hour if I'm working on the novel but it's not happy to show itself off.

Bout of Books 15

I am once again doing the Bout of Books readathon. It's running from the 4th to 10th January.

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, January 4th and runs through Sunday, January 10th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 15 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. - From the Bout of Books team

Books to Read

  • All of the Above by James Dawson
  • Sleepless by Lou Morgan
  •  Demons of Ghent by Helen Grant
  • Urban Legends by Helen Grant
  • Superman Annual 2014
  • Straight White Male by John Niven
  • Batman Annual 2014

What I read today: All of the Above by James Dawson
Total of books read today: 1
No. of books started today: 0
No. of pages read today: 142 pages

Thoughts: Very little reading done today, due to sleeping through the day. I have flipped my sleeping pattern. I'm trying to fix it but I'm failing.

Tuesday 5.1.2016 (wrote Tuesday, 6.53 am)

Challenge-Would you rather:
  • Lend books to someone who dog-ears pages or to someone who reads with cheesy Cheetos fingers?
Dog eared because food stains are the worst.
  • Be able to meet one character of your choice or meet one author of your choice?
I have to say character because that just seems more magical.
  • Never be allowed in a book store again or never be allowed in a library again?
I don't think I could function never being allowed in a library again but I would certainly save money if I was banned from all bookshops and online shopping is a thing.
  • Have to choose one of your favorite characters to die in their book or have to pick one of your favorite couples to break up in their book?
I would certainly break up the couple mainly because none of my favourite couples are fully canon. Also people break up and move on. You usually can't move on from being dead, except in some books.
  • Be required to read Twilight once a year for the rest of your life or The Scarlet Letter once a year for the rest of your life?
I've never read The Scarlet Letter but Twilight was certainly enough once and it's four books and I'm the type of person who would have to read them all.
What I read today: Demons of Ghent by Helen Grant,
Total of books read today: 1
No. of books started today: 1
No. of pages read today: 200ish pages
Pages read total: 342 pages
Books Finished Today: 0

Total Books Finished:1
Thoughts: I made a mistake of continuing to read the I'm reading without taking a note of the page I was on. I can't decide if it was more or less than 200 pages so I've decided just go for that number. Today could have been better. My reverse sleeping pattern is still problematic.

Bout of Books 13

I shall be participating in the Bouts of Books again (missed the last one out), a week long readathon from the 11h to the 17th May 2015.

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, May 11th and runs through Sunday, May 17th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 13 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. - From the Bout of Books team
